2012/13 Budget Consultation

Overview

The purpose of this consultation is to gather your views on the Avon and Somerset Police budget for 2012-13 and in particular whether you think there should be an increase in the policing part of the council tax. We will also be asking questions on your perceptions of crime and confidence in your local police.

Why we are consulting

It is the responsibility of Avon and Somerset Police Authority to set the policing budget for 2012-13 (including the policing part of the council tax). Avon and Somerset Police have an annual budget of £280 million which is made up of central Home Office grants (66%) and local Council Tax (33%).

Over the period 2011 – 2015 police forces in England and Wales face a significant spending challenge, with central government funding being cut by 20%.

This means that there will be some difficult decisions to be made and we need your views and opinions to help make these decisions.

We will also be asking people about the Council Tax question in this survey at the following places:

The Podium (Bath) - 24 November
The Galleries (Bristol) - 9 December
For All Healthy Living Centre (Weston) - 12 December
Cabot Circus (Bristol) - 15 December
Garden World (Brent Knoll) - 19 December
ASDA (Yeovil) - 5 January

What happens next

The results of the survey will be shared with the Constabulary and Police Authority members before they set the final budget in February. This is one element of a programme of consultation that we are running on the budget. The results of this survey and the other consultation that we are running will be published on this website in February

Results

Avon and Somerset Police Authority met on 8th February 2012 to discuss and set the 2012/13 police budget and set its part of the council tax.

Feedback

We Asked
Whether you thought we should accept the government offer of a one off grant and freeze the policing part of the council tax, or whether we should reject the offer and increase it.
You said
The majority of survey and focus group participants were in favour of accepting the government offer and freezing the policing part of the council tax. Whilst a small majority of face to face (shopping centres) participants were in a favour of an increase, most of these people favoured a small increase only.
We did
We decided to accept the one off government grant and freeze the policing part of the council tax, which provides us with funding equivalent to a 3% increase for one year.
